The Story
Chasing Light
at the Edge of the World
Photography found Richard DeLow the way it finds most serious practitioners — not as a hobby, but as an obsession. A camera in hand changed how he moved through the world: slower, more deliberate, perpetually scanning the horizon for the light that makes an ordinary scene extraordinary.
His work takes him to the places where land meets sky in the most dramatic terms — the sea stacks of the Oregon coast at golden hour, the 1,000-foot canyon walls of Zion at last light, the ancient rainforests of the Olympic Peninsula in morning fog. These are landscapes that demand to be seen at scale, and DeLow’s images deliver exactly that.
Based in Portland, Oregon, Richard travels extensively throughout the American West and Pacific Northwest, often timing his arrivals to catch specific light conditions he’s planned months in advance. The eclipse images from Madras, Oregon in 2017 required a journey of over a thousand miles and two years of planning. The resulting photographs justified every mile.
His printing philosophy mirrors his photographic approach: uncompromising. Every print is produced to museum archival standards, using materials rated for 100+ years. Whether it’s a fine art lustre print or a signature acrylic face-mount, each piece ships with a certificate of authenticity and the confidence that it will look as stunning in forty years as it does today.
The best landscape photographs aren’t taken — they’re waited for. I’ll return to the same location across seasons, watching how the light changes, looking for the single moment when everything aligns. A great image can take years to collect.
I print large because landscape photography was made to be seen large. A 5×7 of the Narrows tells a different story than a 40×60 metal print of the same image. Scale is part of the art — it’s why I offer six sizes in four mediums.
Capture is only half the equation. Every image goes through meticulous post-processing — color, contrast, dynamic range — before being released. And every print is produced by labs I’ve tested personally. The image on your wall will be exactly what I intended.
